Early life-like style solid redwood canvasback drake by Richard “Fresh Air Dick” Janson (Sonoma, CA) ca. 1900. This exact decoy is pictured at the top of page 116 of Wildfowl Decoys of California by Michael Miller. This decoy is also pictured on pages 83 (floating) and 89 (head shot) in Richard “Fresh Air Dick” Janson by Wallace Lourdeaux. Decoys by Janson this early are most assuredly from his personal hunting rig. These early examples do not come available often and are highly prized by collectors. This example is a mix of original and very old in use repaint. I suspect that the front portion of the bill has had professional repair. Measures just over 14” in length.
